Maintaining the trees and turf along this historic park -one of the country's most fashionable urban boulevards - is the primary concern of this committee, which is a joint committee of NABB and the Friends of the Public Gardens. Our work supplements the work of the city's Parks Department.

Mall StatueIn the mid-60's, when the ravages of Dutch Elm Disease reached Back Bay, the committee rallied to have the Mall's remaining elms treated with what scientific protection was then available. Today, the Mall Committee's DED injections, pruning, and fertilization programs have kept alive the last great urban stand of American elms in the Northeast.

Still, attrition from age, storms, and disease takes 2 or 3 giants annually. New planting of disease-resistant elms and other shade trees are financed by the Mall Committee through grants, individual donations, and fundraising events.

The Memorial Tree Program makes it possible for individuals to plant a tree on the Mall for a dedicated purpose for a contribution of $1,000. Individuals may also adopt one of the Heritage Trees on the Mall (those larger than 32" caliper) for a $300 donation. Memorial benches are also available at a cost of $4,000.

The Mall Committee also advises City officials on the placement of monuments on the Mall. With the help of the Garden Club of the Back Bay, Committee members help maintain the plantings around several monuments.
